I was recently chatting with a hyper-local news publisher in Upstate New York who also had a full time job NOT in the media industry.
Her days are filled with making a living, and her nights and weekends are packed with writing and posting content that benefits her community … and selling local ads to local businesses, to keep the LOCAL news site alive in an area that is underserved by larger media outlets.
I wondered with a newsroom of one person, where is the room for engagement and outreach?
“There isn’t,” she said simply.
But, the struggle is not just limited to micro-sized newsrooms.
Another recent conversation with a small non-profit executive director resulted in the hard truth that after administrative duties, working their regular 9-5 and doing a lot of heavy lifting, they had moments where they felt like they lost sight of why they started the mission in the first place … and the moments to focus enough to tell the story are few and far between.
So, here’s an idea.
